5 Water Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know
Water safety isn't just a swim school topic — it's a life skill. Here are five habits every parent should instill early.
1. Never Swim Alone
Teach your child to always swim with a buddy or an adult present. Even strong swimmers can get into trouble — having someone nearby makes all the difference.
2. Enter Feet First in Unfamiliar Water
Jumping or diving into unknown water (lakes, reservoirs, beaches) is one of the leading causes of spinal injuries in children. Feet first, always.
3. Know Where the Lifeguard Is
At public pools and beaches, point out the lifeguard station when you arrive. Make it a habit — your child should always know who to call for help.
4. Respect the Flags
At beaches, flag systems indicate water conditions. Red flag = no swimming. Yellow = caution. Teach your child what each colour means before your first beach trip.
5. Learn to Float
Floating on your back is the single most important survival skill in water. If your child can float and call for help, they have a fighting chance in an emergency. We teach this from day one at SwimKidsSG.
